How to Become More Conscious

In a world where distractions lurk around every corner, becoming more conscious may seem impossible. Emails, notifications, and projects constantly bombard us, leaving little room for self-awareness. But that doesn’t mean you can’t become more conscious in this digital age.

Here are some tips to become more conscious.

What Is Consciousness?

Consciousness refers to being aware of your thoughts, feelings, and surroundings. It is the basis of your ability to think, remember, and make decisions.

Why Is Consciousness Important?

Here’s why becoming conscious is important.

  • Improves your problem-solving abilities
  • Facilitates learning
  • Improves communication
  • Encourages innovation and progress
  • Develops emotional bond and relationship
  • Ability to adapt

Tips To Become More Conscious

1. Observe

Observing yourself and your surroundings is necessary to become more conscious. Introspect yourself by examining your thoughts, actions, and beliefs. Dedicate 5-10 minutes every day, preferably before going to bed, to track your progress. Regular introspection can help you become more conscious and make positive changes in your life.

Besides introspecting yourself, it’s also necessary that you observe your surroundings. Being conscious means being present, and the more you observe, the more you’ll learn.

2. Seek Wisdom

The more you know, the more conscious you can be and the better equipped you will be to make informed decisions. You can read books, take courses, and attend seminars, and most importantly meditate to expand your knowledge.

3. Journaling

Pour your ideas, dreams, and fears onto the paper — that’s journaling. It’s like having a conversation with your future self. Besides being therapeutic, journaling is a fantastic way to track your progress towards consciousness.

Journaling also opens the door to new opportunities. Who knows, you might discover a million-dollar business idea within those scribbles.

4. Mindful Munching

We all eat daily, but do you remember the last time you truly savoured a meal? Instead of scarfing down your food, try dining slowly and with focus. Turn off the TV, put away your phone, and focus on every bite. Trust me, you’ll enjoy it, and your taste buds will thank you for it.

When you consistently practice eating with focus, your consciousness will increase. You’ll start implementing the same (focus) in other areas of your life.

5. Practice Empathy

Empathy is closely related to consciousness. Understanding and sharing the emotions of others makes you know how humans act and react, which, in turn, helps increase your consciousness. It also allows you to connect with people on a deeper level, which is useful for networking.

6. Don’t Multitask

Multitasking is like juggling text messages while driving through a maze blindfolded — a risky adventure you’re better off avoiding!

Learn to focus on one thing at a time. It helps increase your consciousness, besides enhancing your productivity.

Here’s an example of why you need to avoid multitasking.

Assume you’re preparing a financial report and receive email notifications on your phone. Many people fall into the trap of checking their email and end up wasting hours in the process. To avoid falling into this trap, complete the report first, then check your email. Implement this in your daily work life, and you’ll notice a significant increase in productivity.

7. Embrace Failure

Life is a series of blunders and mishaps, and there’s nothing you can do about it than face it. Realize that every failure is a lesson. The primary reason to become more conscious is to succeed in life. What better way to grow than by learning from your mistakes?

8. Take Care of Your Body

Many people neglect their health and bodies on their journey to success, which is wrong. When you keep burning yourself, your consciousness will go down, and so will your productivity. Know that it’s perfectly okay to take days off. Treat yourself with the same kindness you’d to your loved ones.

Keeping your body fit is also an essential part of self-awareness and growth. Good health is necessary to work towards success and make sound decisions. Spend at least an hour a day to work out and eat healthily whenever possible.

9. Disconnect From the Digital World; Reconnect With the Real World

Our smartphones play a crucial role in our day-to-day lives and are practically extensions of ourselves these days. However, to become more conscious, consider going on a digital detox every now and then, perhaps a day during your quarterly break.

Disconnect from the digital world and go on an adventurous trip or do whatever you like. You’ll be amazed at how refreshing it is to unplug from the digital world and reconnect with the real world.

The Final Word

Becoming more conscious is a journey, not a destination. It’s difficult at first but incredibly rewarding. Observe yourself and the world around you, abandon multitasking, and begin journaling. Embrace failure with open arms, and don’t forget to savour your food!
