Why is Self-Esteem Important for Success

Do you like looking at yourself in the mirror? Do you believe in yourself? Overall, do you like you and the person you are?

If you answered YES to these questions, you have healthy self-esteem. If not, it’s time to start working on improving it.

In this article, I discuss in detail why self-esteem is important for success.

What is Self-Esteem?

Self-esteem is a person’s overall evaluation and perception of themselves. It is a subjective evaluation of one’s worth, value, and abilities. In other words, self-esteem refers to how much a person likes, accepts, and respects themselves, as well as how they perceive their own abilities and qualities.

Healthy self-esteem is crucial for mental and emotional well-being. Generally, people with high self-esteem have a positive self-image, feel confident in their abilities, and are more likely to handle challenges and setbacks better.

On the other hand, people with low self-esteem may struggle with feelings of inadequacy, self-doubt, and a negative self-image. This can lead to difficulties in social interactions, a fear of failure, and a general sense of unhappiness.

Why is Self-Esteem Important for Success?

One of the main components to attain lasting success (however you personally measure success) is the belief that you can do it. Believing in yourself (self-esteem) is an attitude. You have to learn to believe in yourself to make what you want a reality.

Unfortunately, extensive research has revealed that over 85% of people have low self-esteem! When I first heard this shocking statistic, I was a little sceptical. But then I remembered all of the coaching clients I worked with over the last 35 years, and most of them had some kind of self-esteem issue.

Many of these clients set goals but never accomplished them. There seemed to be a theme of lack of completion and commitment. This is one of the key components in raising self-esteem – keeping commitments to yourself and others. And as these clients started taking responsibility for accomplishing what they committed to, their self-esteem started to increase, and so did their income.

To conquer the obstacles that come in your life, you must believe in yourself and have faith that you can accomplish your dreams. To believe in yourself is important but to know yourself is the key to lasting success. To get to know yourself start asking introspective questions such as:

  • What do I love to do?
  • What are my greatest talents, skills, and gifts?
  • What have I already been successful at?
  • Who am I?

Know that without true, authentic love and appreciation for yourself, you can’t increase your self-esteem.

In summary, here’s why self-esteem is important for success:

  • It boosts your confidence, which, as a result, will motivate you.
  • It makes you resilient against setbacks and failures.
  • It allows you to make better decisions.
  • It helps to step out of your comfort zone and take calculated risks.
  • It makes you quickly adapt to the constantly changing world.
  • It improves your mental and emotional well-being.

Conclusion

I have found that by asking empowering questions to yourself, you can start building your self-esteem. One of the reasons questions work so well in boosting self-esteem is that the answer is in the question you ask.

If you ask about the good in your life, you will find the answer to it. The opposite is also true. So make sure to focus on questions that empower you. If you have trouble figuring out what questions to ask, you can find 1001 life-changing questions in my book, “Ask and You Will Succeed.”
